ANAMBRA STATE—The police command has confirmed that it has saved a
six-month old baby from the wreckage of a storey building which was reported to
have collapsed at Obosi close to Onitsha in Anambra State on Sunday. The
spokesman of the police command in Anambra state, SP, Haruna Mohammaed also
revealed in a statement that the baby’s mother died in the incident and many
others were injured. Mohammed said the incident took place around 4:00pm and he
could not give full details of the deceased as at the time he spoke to
journalists on the incident. According to him, the body was now deposited in
mortuary and investigation was now ongoing to ascertain the cause of the
collapse. According to him, the scene had been cordoned off by the police and
other security agencies and efforts are currently ongoing to rescue victims
suspected to be trapped inside the building.
In his words,
“On Sunday, one-story building suddenly collapsed at Umuota village, Obosi town in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
“Scene was visited and cordoned off by the police attached to Obosi Division and other security agencies in order to prevent hoodlums from gaining advantage to loot, while effort is ongoing to rescue other victims suspected to have been trapped in the building.
“One person, a woman of about 40 years old, whose name is yet to be ascertained, was confirmed dead by a medical doctor and her baby is responding to treatment. “Corpse deposited at St. Edward’s Mortuary for preservation.
“Case under investigation to ascertain circumstances surrounding the incident.”
