WTO Choose Okonjo-Iweala and Successful Korean Economist As Finalist For The DG Position – VOICE OF THE EAST


Members of the World Trade
Organization have selected two finalists to advance the final round in the race
for the leadership of the Geneva-based global trade body, according to a Bloomberg
report on Wednesday.

The candidates according to
familiar sources are Igbo Economist, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and South Korea’s Yoo

The results were officially
announced earlier this morning in Geneva by WTO General Council Chairman, David

By implication, three candidates
have been edged out of the race by the selected duo.

Three candidates have, by
implication, been edged out of the race by the chosen duo. The edged out
candidates include United Kingdom’s Liam Fox, Kenya’s Amina Jibril, and Saudi
Arabia’s Mohammad Al-Tuwaijri. They were edged out, having not secured enough
support in the second round of consulations, according to the Wednesday evening

The World-acclaimed Economist, Mrs
Okonjo-Iweala was Nigeria’s finance minister during the tenures of former
presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan. She is favoured by her  experience working at international international
governance bodies as a former managing director of the World Bank and as a
chairman at the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization.

On the other hand, Mrs. Yoo is
South Korea’s trade minister. She has been instrumental in the expansion of her
country’s trade network through bilateral accords with the U.S., China and the
United Kingdom.

One of them is expected to emerge
as the WTO’s first female director-general in its 25-year history.
